Hand pump or rechargeable
The Wacaco Nanopresso is a hand-pump maker. You pump it yourself, up to 18 bar, and you add hot water. There is no battery and no heater, so it works anywhere you can boil water, including a campsite.
The others are rechargeable or come with power cables. The iKape hot and cold maker has an electric pump, so you do not pump it by hand, and it brews with hot or cold water you add. The MaxxPresso M3 and M4 have a built-in battery and need no outlet. The table above lists battery size, pressure and charging for each maker.
Choose the Nanopresso if you never want to charge anything, and the V1 if you want the maker to heat cold water itself.
Ground coffee, Nespresso compatible capsules, or Dolce Gusto
Ground coffee works in every maker on this page. Use a fine espresso grind. The Kapo K1 holds 14 to 18 g in its 51 mm basket, with 16 g as the dose to start from. The V1 ground basket holds 8 to 10 g. The H4A's stainless steel ground coffee adapter takes 10 g. See espresso ground coffee and the ground coffee brew method guide.
Nespresso compatible capsules fit the LePresso, the Hibrew H4A and the MaxxPresso M3, which is a 2-in-1 and takes them next to ground coffee. These capsules are compatible with Nespresso Original machines. None of these makers take Vertuo capsules, and we do not stock Vertuo. Browse Nespresso capsules and the capsule compatibility guide.
Dolce Gusto compatible capsules fit the LePresso 4-in-1. Machines that take more than one capsule system are on the multi-capsule coffee machines page. Pods are in Dolce Gusto pods, and machines that stay on a counter are in Dolce Gusto machines.
Office, travel, car and camping
At a desk, pick the LePresso if you want milk in your coffee, since it is the only maker here with a built-in frother. The IKAPE V1 heats its own water, so it works at a desk far from a kettle. The Hibrew H4A fits a desk drawer or a hotel room.
For travel, the Kapo K1 weighs about 700 g, and the V1 and the iKape hot and cold maker about 800 g each. The V1 is carry-on friendly. In the car, the V1 charges from a 12V/24V car charger and the H4A comes with a cigarette-lighter adapter.
For camping, take the Nanopresso if you will have a kettle or a flask, because it needs no power. The Kapo K1 has no heater either, so it needs that hot water too. Take the V1 if you will only have cold water, because it heats it to 92 degrees.
Bundles and the coffee to brew
The IKAPE V1, the Kapo K1 (white included), the Wacaco Nanopresso, the MaxxPresso M4 and the MaxxPresso M3 are also sold with three 250 g bags of Granell flavoured ground coffee: Pistachio, Mango and Coconut. Any of those makers can also take other espresso ground coffee from the espresso ground coffee range, or beans you grind yourself from whole coffee beans.
The Hibrew H4A is also sold with 50 Granell Nespresso compatible capsules: 10 each of Clasico, Intenso, Colombia, Brasil and Vainilla. That capsule bundle is in machine and coffee bundles. The H4A itself sits with Nespresso machines.
To grind on the trip, the coffee grinders range has the Cera+ CGE01, a rechargeable conical burr grinder of about 500 g, and the iKape V2 KM7 hand grinder.
If a portable maker is too small for daily use at home, see the countertop espresso machines, or compare machine types on the coffee machine comparison page. Tampers, pitchers and other tools are in the espresso machine accessories guide. To make coffee with no machine at all, see espresso without a machine and the moka pot guide.
